Mach 5 passenger jet

Post by 88V8 »

Not yet.
But a combination turbo-ramjet engine that might power a small Mach 5 jet has been test run.
Twenty passengers London-New York in 90 minutes?

One does have to wonder whether there is much point in faster commercial flying. Surely the greatest acceleration in overall transit times would come from a 1950s reset of the departure/arrivals process.

Anyway, read all about it, and dream.

Nice. The real benefit would be on longer routes than New York but this would not have the range for such flights.

And you still have the political problems of nations not allowing overflying, which crippled Concorde. Plus the usual complaints about it not being "green".

I've always thought we're heading more towards a slower, more spacious, flying cruise ship type experience.

Airships perhaps?

So you sit in your comfy room overlooking the Atlantic Ocesn doing business Via Starlink as you hear the bell for your 7pm dinner slot. You might head up to the casino or perhaps the cinema afterwards , or perhaps a drink or 2 at the bar before turning in for the night. When you wake up, you'll head down for breakfast then 2 hours later you'll touch down in central New York.

I couldn't agree more. I hate airports with a vengeance, so I look forward to a bit of peace in the plane, particularly for 2-5 hour flights. Fortunately I'm able to 'switch off' easily, so with a bit of reading, working, snoozing etc, the time passes very fast and I'm always a bit irritated at having to land so soon.

When I stop work, I intend to travel by train a lot more. Perhaps the bloody Sicilians will finally move into the 21st century and allow a bridge or tunnel to be built to Italy so we can go straight down to Catania or Palermo without being held hostage by the ferry mafia! ;)
