Protecting the lenses: UV filter, hood or both?

Post by stevensfo »

For my first DSLR, I went a bit overboard and for each lens, got a UV filter and lens hood. Now I've got a full-frame model, I'm wondering if this is really necessary. I know the filter is for protection rather than UV, but I've heard stories where some filters seem to affect the image. So maybe leave the lens naked and just use a hood.

What do you guys do?

I use a uv filter on all my lenses except my macro which doesn't really need it, a decent quality one should not degrade the image significantly.

Hoods should be used to avoid lens flare, they can have a secondary role as protection.

Thanks. So I think I'll continue and use both as in the past. I need a 77mm filter and hood. I'm amazed at the variation in the price of filters!

Somewhat out of date, but suggests that ain't necessarily so...
