So when did 'autogyro' get changed to 'gyrocopter'? Anyone receive the memo? I didn't.

So when did 'autogyro' get changed to 'gyrocopter'? Anyone receive the memo? I didn't.

Well the original wikipedia page for 'autogyro' in 2002 said "autogyro, soemtimes[sic] called a gyrocopter".

On some edits of the page that changes to "sometimes incorrectly called a gyroplane or Gyrocopter", but the current version just states "also known as...".

The name Autogiro was a trademark of the Cierva Autogiro Company - Juan de la Cierva being credited with its "invention".
Scotland wasn't far behind - with David Kay of Auchterarder who designed and flew autogiros from the late 1920's. He is credited with the introduction of variable incidence rotors. His type 33/1 was described in Flight magazine of 1934, and the company building them was Kay Gyroplanes Limited.
So take your pick - autogiro, autogyro, gyrocopter, gyroplane.
