Easter

It’s that time of year … when religious films – especially those with a crucifixion scene – are shown on TV. I can understand that, because it is in B&W and in Italian (with subtitles), Pasolinis’s Gospel According to Matthew is not first choice of the programme compilers. But I well remember the first time I ever saw it, when it was introduced by the continuity voice as “And now for something utterly different from the religious epics usually screened at this time of year: Pasolini’s quite extraordinary Gospel [etc]…”
And he was right.
(It was incidentally filmed in Matera - the same village as Mel Gibson's The Passion...)
