Turner The man who painted Britain

Post by Leothebear »

This was on BBC4 recently, it may have been a repeat. On the Iplayer now for sure.
A thoroughly enjoyable insight into a truly great painter. 5*

Seconded! Marvellous prog. (It's at https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... ed-britain) What a very naughty boy he turned out to be. :)

I'm also enjoying the re-run of Andrew Graham Dixon's three-parter on the Art of France (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b ... -ca-change). I know that AGD isn't everyone's cup of café crème, but it's a bit different from the usual format, in that he focuses really quite strongly on how the successive tides of politics and philosophy (medieval world view > hundred years war > Louis XIV > enlightenment > revolution etc) impacted on the changing preferences in art. Nicely done.

I don't know anything about AGD. Will add to the list but it's a very long list! I love art programmes, hope to watch the Turner tomorrow night.

I enjoy watching 'Britain's Lost Masterpieces' with Bendor Grosvenor (crazy name, nice chap)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b096mh ... des/player

I could watch all day as they clean, restore and attempt to discover the true nature of the works of art.

Also: Waldemar Januszczak and his series on the Impressionists. I learnt a lot from that series (repeated in the past month) including odd snippets about the technology which helped give new possibilities in painting.

Waldermar has a really quirky style, but I like his foibles.

Watched the Turner last night,fascinating

I was a bit worried when I saw it was part docu drama but happily not too much of that!

If anyone has any general readable art history recommendations, esp from that period, I'd be interested to hear them. Sadly my brain is a bit crap, so an easily readable style is more my thing these days!
