Top Gun: Maverick

Post by Clitheroekid »

We went to see this a couple of nights ago, and I must admit to being less than enthusiastic. Fortunately, it was on at our local Everyman, a very civilised cinema, where they bring you a bottle of wine to your seat, so I was expecting that I could be pleasantly immune to the shoot 'em up that I was anticipating.

But to my great surprise it was one of the most enjoyable films I've seen for ages. Not having seen the original I'd watched it last weekend and found it to be as expected - a film that was clearly aimed at teenagers (or at least mental age teenagers) and fairly tedious.

But this sequel was massively better. Although it was still pretty simplistic in story terms the characters were far more rounded, and I was really surprised how good Tom Cruise's performance was. The fact that he was 36 years older than in the original may have had a lot to do with it. There was a streak of vulnerability that made him much more human - not just a jock, as he appeared in the original.

And the airborne sequences were truly spectacular - edge of the seat stuff. I'd love to see it in an Imax cinema, but it's definitely a film you should watch in a cinema and not on TV, no matter how big your screen and how good the sound system.

Highly recommended, against all expectations.

Yeah it was an absolute blast and transcended the fact that you pretty much always knew exactly what was going to happen next.

Everyone here loved it - even though there were some quiet protests at the suggestion of going :D

Ditto.

Saw it at my local Everyman too. The usherettes come round before the show to take your orders for drinks and food and we sat on one of the sofas in the back row.

Great fun film.

Yep, son and I saw it at an Imax, definitely a film to be watched on a big screen. Much of it was pretty much a remake of the first film (nearly line for line in some parts) but enjoyed it. Great fun.

My misses, after a visit to see it in a Dolby Cinema informed me she thought the sound at home was better! I cant wait to watch it again at home to compare. Several people have seen the movie in different formats with IMAX being the preferred. I was tempted to try it in a 4DX only because I haven't tried one and wanted to watch Maverick again.

I wonder, after all the rave reviews if it will win any awards. It definitely gave me a buzz.

Looks like I will be waiting till November before it's out on disc. Streaming, whilst available now has limitations. I think there is Atmos sound on the apple TV version but I want the full bandwidth available on the disc.

I play the soundtrack every now and again to keep me in the zone and still remember the buzz it gave me.

There are rumours of a third but will that spoil things or extend the goodness. After all it wasn't a brilliant film but somehow it was a brilliant film.

For the aviation geeks… this is how Tomcat vs 5th gen aircraft really would play out!
