The greatest live song on TV

Post by terminal7 »

Vanilla Fudge on the Ed Sullivan Show - yes this is a live recording of You Keep Me Hanging On some 50 years ago. The singing of Mark Stein and the incredible performance of one of the great rock drummers - Carmine Appice is a delight. Have a look and listen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dJO47d26kc

Any other suggestions for greatest live song song on TV - no lip sync nonsense.

I don't know how to determine the greatest, but this is pretty competent from The Doors (also on Ed Sullivan)

The infamous Hendrix performance on the Lulu show must rank up there. He was supposed to duet with Lulu after Voodoo Chlie and Hey Joe but decided to play a tribute to Cream instead.

Quite T7,
I was going to post this on the generic Music thread and in fact searched if I'd posted it before as it's been on my radar a while. It is incredible, that quality in the studio, live!, 54 years ago!! The whole band so together.
Incredible is the right word.

All You Need Is Love*

I was too young to watch it back in 1967 but the impact of the first live global television broadcast must have been immense. And what a message to the world.

*Mostly live.
The Beatles, accompanied by the orchestra and the studio guests, then performed the entire song, overdubbing onto the pre-recorded rhythm track. In addition to the lead and backing vocals and the orchestra, the live elements were McCartney's bass guitar part, Harrison's guitar solo and Starr's drums.

You must recall that back then only a very wealthy minority owned TVs. So a live broadcast in 1967 might have only been seen by a 'wealthy elite'.

Is 'The greatest song' what people wanted to hear, or one that created the greatest impact irrespective?

Interesting, I would have thought that by 1967 most UK households had a TV, even if was the size of a washing machine, was black and white, and only showed two channels.

We were a modest household at that time, but we got a TV in the mid to late 1950s and, at that time, we were the first family on our street to have one. A year later "next door" had a TV and they could get ITV as well as the BBC that we were stuck with.

Colour TVs came along later. I recall feeling jealous when a kid in my class at school got a colour TV - might have been 1965 or so.

Perhaps you're right. These stats also suggest so https://closer.ac.uk/data/television-ow ... ouseholds/
I just recall us/neighbours having TV (especially colour) as a decided luxury. The jolt of having B+W to a colour set at home was something, even if it was hired. The default being a set from Radio Rentals. And the Apollo landings being a spur to many people getting their first TVs.

Very wealthy? I think you have the wrong decade - that might be true of 1957.

Not a huge fan of the Arctic Monkeys but I am of this song. I just love the youthful confidence and exuberance of it all. Reminds me of early days Jam.

Nah - as others have said the big growth was in the 1950s, by 1961 75% of households had one :

I've can think of two performances which were amazing that I came across once on YouTube and have never managed to find again, one was by Elvis in amongst an orchestra singing "something" that wasn't one of his megahits (so either an album track or a cover), and the other was, randomly, by Lena Zavaroni which I think must have been on her own show. In both cases I can't think what the song is, and I've had a bit of a hunt through YouTube and not been able to find the ones I'm thinking of.

Strictly speaking not TV - but live at Brixton I give you one of the most underrated UK bands - The Cult and She Sells Sanctuary.

Still going strong with the remarkable voice and stage presence of Ian Astbury as well as Billy Duffy on rhythm guitar.

Saw Ian Astbury as lead singer in The Riders on the Storm (follow-on from The Doors) about 10-12 years ago and he was remarkably good, almost as good as Jim Morrison himself and that is saying something.

I think Vanilla Fudge cheated though as they are very clearly off their nuts on drugs! Greatest TV performance that I can remember seeing was Radiohead on Later in 1997: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzPtr_n-m8A

Such a complex song, such amazing work by Jonny Greenwood.

Radiohead might be the only band after 1975 that i like. Any band that claims Olivier Messiaen as an influence can't be all bad.

That is good although I like even more their version of "Next" from the same show. The language might be a bit fruity for some so I won't link . .

Difficult to pick a single performance, but for me the whole televised Queen set from Wembley, during Live Aid in 1985 has got to be one of the most enjoyable live sets I've ever seen on TV.

Freddie had over 72,000 people in the Wembley stadium, and many millions more around the world, absolutely wrapped around his finger for his whole set.

If I've got to pick a favourite song from the set, then it would have to be Radio Ga Ga, purely for the shots of the crowd singing the song back to him -

What a fantastic showman that guy was...

Cheers,

Still going, wow. I remember them as being one of those bands that changed their names every couple of years to 'avoid being pigeon-holed'. Same as Spizz Energi <?> Spizz Oil > Athletico Spizz 80 >?
Southern Death Cult > Death Cult > The Cult. John Peel was a BIG fan of theirs. Here's his May-1982 Peel Session featuring them.
