A United Kingdom

Post by zico »

8/10. Drama, tells its story straightforwardly but effectively, fascinating and enjoyable.

It's set in the 50's based on a true story about the heir to Bechuanaland marrying a white English woman, the racism they encounter (from various sides) and the dastardly deeds of the British government. The story is simplified for dramatic effect and is a bit of a morality play, but it's a fascinating glimpse into different times, when the British still had a surprisingly big say in what happened in Africa.

British officials are portrayed as villains through and through.
Locations are Central London and Southern Africa, and both locations come across well, giving a good feel of what it would be like to live there in those times.

The main actor and actress are engaging, the story was involving, and at times quite moving.
The twist for me at the end was what happened to Bechuanaland subsequently (If you don't know, best not to look it up until after you've seen the film).
