The Last Vermeer on Netflix

Post by forgotusername »

Watched last night. Entertaining film set in Holland at the end of the Second World War with an intriguing plot with many twist and turns.

Also for location spotters, there's a scene supposedly at the home of a wealthy Art museum director which shows an opulent interior. It's actually Eltham Palace near Lewisham South London. I visited earlier this year to see where young Henry V111 grew up but after World War 1 the fabulously rich Courtauld's "textile magnates, bought Eltham in the 1930s. They built an ultra-modern home adjoining the medieval palace. Sparing no expense the house’s sleek design is the epitome of Art Deco luxury".

A couple of actors and their film crew pale into insignificance alongside the rich and famous high society that once knew this place.

Looks good, thanks for flagging it up. Netflix never alerts me to stuff I might actually like!

1930's ultra modern art deco on the inside but Tudor on the outside, which makes quite a contrast! A bit of a time-warp feeling when you first walk in...

I too visited earlier this year and, as an art deco fan anyway, I thought it was great. I did wonder if the key to a successful marriage is separate bedrooms but with an adjoining door! The only downer was that due to the lack of rain and the hosepipe bans they'd turned off the waterfalls and the gardens were mostly just brown. I'll go again in spring. ;)

I'm a Londoner and embarrassed to say I've still not been to Eltham Palace. Sarf of the river though...

thx. make sure you read all the "what happened next" bits at the end. It was based on fact after all.

Managed about 30 mins - the bad script, the awful acting and the 'allo allo' characterisations just became too much.
