Winter Walks

Post by bungeejumper »

Another of those quiet covid-era TV series that have been so under-plugged by the BBC that you don't actually pick up on them until they're into their second season.

But I've been really enjoying these nine thirty-minuters (to date). Somewhere between Slow TV and Thought For the Day, with just a single hand-held camera** presenting amazing views over North Yorkshire and Cumbria in the cold and the frost. And with presenters who've actually got something to say about peace and solitude and reflection, and self-doubt and the joys of rural calm. Not Ant and Dec, then.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... series-2-2. My favourites so far have been Richard Coles, Alastair Campbell, Baroness Warsi and the irrepressible Reverend Kate Bottley (who she?). TV to unwind to. Give it a go.

** One camera? Well, give or take a drone, perhaps?

LOL, she is rather forthright. It's not every day that you hear a vicar saying she'll do anything for beer and chips and a snog. But she describes her own life as loud and over-busy, and she makes a particularly good case for the opposite. I very much respected what she had to say about the period of retreat that she had to survive before she was ordained. (No spoilers please - watch it for yourselves!)

I haven't seen it yet
sorry I meant when she was on Googlebox
She has also been on Would I lie to you
and the story about drinking too much communion wine, as she had to do services at 3 churches one morning
went back to the sacristy to go to the loo, threw up, not realising her microphone was still on, so the whole congregation got to witness and hear that
was a blinder

I've enjoyed every one so far, except Alastair Campbell. I've disliked the chap ever since the 'weapons of mass destruction' charade leading to the death of David Kelly and his attempted downfall of the BBC. He even introduced himself to a passing hiker as 'I'm Alistair Campbell'. Self promoting twonk !

Depressive, reformed alcoholic, and a seriously intelligent/disruptive high-flyer who burned out and crashed, and who doesn't mind talking about it now. His hour-long BBC piece on Depression and Me (currently off from iPlayer, but on https://vimeo.com/329310575) was properly courageous - and also appropriately humble, considering the mess he helped to cause at the time. ;)

He sure did sound quite lonely in this programme, though. And getting solace from the hostile conditions. But no wonder he still wanted to be recognised by the public.
