Interesting Liverpool

Post by tonyreptiles »

Hi All,

I'm planning a trip to Liverpool on my narrowboat this summer. To my amazement, I realise that I have never really been there. I've been there for gigs and the occasional meeting, but never had any time to look around, eat, drink or see the sights.

I'll be going with a couple of other boats whose skippers like a bit of ale. What we're looking for is:

- Interesting pubs with worthy ales
- Interesting/quirky places to eat
- Vegetarian restaurants
- Places to walk the dog - big open spaces
- Interesting places to go/see/do

I do hope you good Fools can help. (Are we still Fools, or are we now Lemons?)

Thanks
TR

The Egg Cafe is an excellent veggie place, open all day in an interesting space:

The Roscoe Head has great beer and hasn't been messed about with like so many pubs:

The best dogwalking is in the south of the city - Sefton Park and by the river at Festival Gardens and Otterspool Prmoenade.

For a decent pint in an interesting building, try the Philharmonic, on the street between the two cathedrals, is that Hope Street?

Seconded, and it's got the most amazing mens' loos which you should be sure to visit:

Yes, Hope Street. That whole area, with the Cathedrals, the University and the Georgian buildings, is a good area to focus on rather than the touristy areas around Albert Dock, Liverpool One and the Cavern area, depending on what you like of course.

Ye Cracke is close by and a good pub also - it was where John Lennon was reputed to have misspent his youth:

I went to meet my brother on his narrowboat in the dock at Liverpool in May 2015. We (including spouses) had a great time. The best bits were

1. You have three venues adjacent to the dock, Tate, Maritime and Museum of Liverpool.
2. Art gallery in town.
3. Get the metro to Port Sunlight, the Museum there has a splendid collection.
4. Do the 'Ferry cross the Mersey' round trip.

Apart from the metro and ferry it is all free, yes costing nothing! And, you find that people will speak to you even though you have not been formally introduced, quite amazing.

Have a lovely time. Paul

It's worth spending a few pounds on the open top tourist bus as that loops around the city and will allow you to jump on and off all day.

The commentary is pretty interesting and aside from other stops it will take you to both cathedrals, we stayed in a hotel near the waterside next to the Tate museum and the driver's were good enough to stop the bus next to our hotel (not an official stop) on a number of occasions.
