Lunch - this Saturday between Hungerford and Ealing

Post by didds »

We are taking our daughter to uni on Saturday - to Ealing (uni of West London).

We wanted to stop for lunch en route but have to be there for between 1400-1530. Coming from central Wiltshire the "obvious" places to stop were maybe Hungerford, Theale, Newbury (west side) or indeed Ealing ... our concern wrt ealing is parking (ie finding somewhere). We consist of a vegetarian (no fish/chicken etc, but dairy is fine), a carnivore (that is happy to eat veggie
if its good!) and one that can float between the two.

I've looked on tripadvisor but nothing is leaping out TBH ...

so can anybody suggest somewhere along that route/those places - it doesn't have to be fine dining particularly, but "greasy spoon" inst really what we want (nothing wrong with them of course, just not what we want Saturday :). Pubs are fine - as long as its not just reheated brakes brothers. (and parking suggestions if in Ealing - we cant park at her uni as its mayhem apparently hence we have a moving in time slot!)

Ethnic cuisine is fine, though probably not chinese.

cheers

The Wetherspoons at the Beaconsfield service area perhaps. It would mean using the A404 between Maidenhead and Wycombe to swop from the M4 to the M40 and then using the A40 as the route into London.

There's a Greggs at the Chieveley services on the M4 at junction 13.
Two steak bakes and a vegan sausage roll should set you back about a fiver.

You're welcome.

Reading is en route. The Oracle https://www.theoracle.com/dining is easily accessible from the M4, has plentiful parking and a mass of restaurants. A lot of the usual suspects but a really wide range and something for every taste.

If you want somewhere "nice" The London Street brasserie is very good: http://www.londonstbrasserie.co.uk/

Cheers,

Juan

On that note.. The restaurant in The Hilton at Chievley is pretty good.

Walking distance from me, very good meatballs.

Not a lot in Theale dining-wise - two of the pubs do decent lunches but menu restricted so check (The Bull and The Volunteer, Theale. Wadworth and Fuller's respectively)
Fox and Hounds at Sheffield Bottom has a good rep, but bit off the beaten track.

There's always L'Ortolan in Shinfield if you feel like going upmarket..

yeah... I only included Theale cos I worked there 18-ish years ago and know its very convenient for the M4. There used to be a really decent curry house there back then (Blue Copra or summat?) but a quick check of tripadvisor would indicate its either closed or nobody has ever rated it! lol.

Changed name a few times I think - if it's the one on the High St (Blue Cobra/Theale tandoori/Flavour of India?)
Now Spice Lounge. Seems to do a good trade, and I live close enough to smell the place (and me on a diet as well)

Have you looked at the back road from Swindon to Newbury, through Lambourn. I haven't been along it for years, but there were several decent pubs either side of where it crosses the A338. That junction is not far from the M4.

Oddly enough, I also lived in Ealing for six years.
Left in 2001 so no suggestions! -although Laroash kebabs seems to still be going...
