Nah - you are thinking of Rugby League where men from t' mine or t'mill had clogs with sharp studs.

What simply dreadful looking people.

I assume, as they are in black and white, that they are from the north?

Could it be a misspelling of phutball? A challenging game I recollect playing and losing many years ago against some fine players including not least the late, lamented Gengulphus.
