It seems to me these so-called influencers exist only to line their own pockets at the expense of some very gullible and impressional youngsters - and some of them appear to be very unpleasant characters:

Indeed.

I had never heard of this stain until he was arrested but he seems to have attained a coverage and output of vile nonsense of which even Rupert Murdoch would be proud

It's just a form of advertising that targets its audience more directly than, say, a newspaper or TV ad.

I guess the Avon Lady or the Tupperware party used to be niche, now it's gone mainstream. Though none of it can rival the kind of columnist whose lies Murdoch's Times famously refused to publish, but whose uncritical platform in the Times's main rival eventually led to him becoming Prime Minister.

I think it's more harmful than run-of-the-mill product advertising. Some of these influencers peddle a luxurious lifetstyle beyond the dreams of their target audience - young (and no so young) people who believe education and achievement is a waste of time if you can make your fortune by being physically alluring and attracting enough online followers to fill your coffers.
