MS Money no longer available from MS

Post by torata »

Apparently it's not been available since spring from the MS download site.
It's still currently available on other platforms, like cnet.
If you use it, it might be an idea to download and keep the installation while you can.

I use Money all the time and have it on disk so that it is transferable to a new machine, at least so far it has been.

I've been using Microsoft Money since the mid 1990s. I find it amazingly useful for keeping track of my current and credit card accounts on the free 2005 UK version. Of particular convenience is that it automatically enters all direct debits into the respective accounts.

I don't use it to keep records of my shares; these are in an Excel workbook.

If Microsoft were to ever reintroduce it I'd be one of the first in the queue to get it. As it is I keep numerous copies of the program and my data on USB memory sticks.

After hearing from some users that it seemed to work with Windows 11, I started planning for the possibility that one day it stops working. So I set up spreadsheets with a list of all regular payments and receipts that are made into my accounts, which I amend whenever a change is needed (or a new payment is set up). This is sufficient information in case one day Microsoft Money refuses to work.

In the meantime "long live Microsoft Money"

Why would it be? The software is MS Money, the version is not the issue.
You seem to be confusing the words "not available" (OP) and "discontinued" (your post)

Another fan/user of MS Money here. I still have a copy of and use the 2000 edition for all my investment portfolios transactions and various customised reports. The budget manager is particularly handy for measuring actual vs. forecast income and "sizing" cash reserve.

A left field suggestion, if you are familiar with cloud computing and/or fancy such a project: I have setup a Windows instance on AWS (Amazon Web Services) with some of the older and critical software packages I use installed, MS Money 2000 being one, as an alternative backup option. There is a small subscription cost in running one of these which you can minimize by keeping your instance switched off when not in use. And accessible from anywhere with an internet connection, of course. See https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/

Edit: and as far as my spreadsheets are concerned, I am now fully migrated to Google Sheets, which I can access on all my various devices, and haven't looked back.

As is often the case, what Microsoft have removed from their servers can be found and downloaded from the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.
Money Plus Sunset Deluxe is designed to be a replacement for expired versions of Money Plus Essentials, Money Plus Deluxe, and Money Plus Premium versions.

And I thought it was only me still using MS Money! I've been using it for over 20 years and am running the Sunset edition currently, although these days I only use it to log transactions and don't use it for any kind of analysis. If I want to analyse anything I just export to a CSV file and use Excel.

The one major downside for me, since I have USD based accounts, is the terrible handling of currencies. It is total pants and must have been designed by a 10 year old!! You go to all the trouble of inputting the exchange rate every time you add a USD transaction and then it totally ignores it when you extract data at a later point by generating a report - it uses the current exchange rate rather than the rate at the time of the transaction to convert to GBP!

Does anyone know if you can generate a report that doesn't automatically convert everything to GBP where you have a mix of USD and GBP based accounts?

All the best, Si

KMyMoney could be a good alternative. Free and open source, works on Linux and Windows.

Since bank accounts and shares work in a pretty similar way to how they worked a decade ago it's still very useful.

(For the record I'm happily using Quicken 2000 :) )

Scott.
